The 30th of January 2025 was an emotional day for 60-year-old Andricah Makwaeba from Ga-Marais as she received the keys to her newly built house. The handover was led by MEC for CoGHSTA, Mr. Basikopo Makamu, alongside Blouberg Local Municipality Mayor, Cllr. Maria Thamaga.
During his address, MEC Makamu emphasized that the fully furnished BNG house provided to Ms. Makwaeba and her children was part of the governments ongoing efforts to address housing challenges faced by vulnerable citizens.
"As a department, we recognize that the house handed over today may not be large enough to accommodate Ms. Makwaebas entire family. That is why, in collaboration with Nax Most Construction Company and Batho Pele Community Empowerment, we are committed to assisting in the completion of the existing unfinished structure to ensure the whole family has adequate shelter," he announced.
Overcome with emotion, Ms. Makwaeba reflected on the hardships she had endured, having lived in a single-room dwelling with 15 dependents. "My living conditions were extremely difficult for many years. However, with the support of my neighbors, ward councillor, municipal officials, and Batho Pele Community Empowerment, my children managed to get by," she shared.
In addition to expressing her gratitude to the government, Ms. Makwaeba extended heartfelt appreciation to her community and everyone who had offered assistance during her time of need.
